Federal Summer Jobs Program
While myfirstpaycheck.com is trying to lead the crusade to help more teens enter the workforce, it is sometimes a challenge in these tough economic conditions.

However, more and more people are starting to realize that summer and after-school jobs for teens are important. I wanted to pass on this editorial in The New York Times because it does a great job of bringing our arguments to a larger stage.

The editorial states:

"The states cannot address this problem without federal help. Congress needs to reinstate the federal summer jobs program that it abandoned in 2000, when it was thought that a strong economy made it unnecessary. It should also recreate other programs that provided subsidized jobs for young people in both the public and private sector. The country cannot allow a generation of young people to fall out of the economy."

Please help us spread this message. It seems like President-Elect Obama will create new job programs when he takes office - and these programs must include jobs for teenagers for their sake and ours.

The Teenage Employment Market
It is scary out there for teens (and parents) looking for jobs. It seems like all of the headlines are about the number of unemployed rising and companies laying people off - but there are still companies that are hiring for the holiday rush. Have you gone out and applied yet? The key is to be prepared (have a resume and cover letter) and be persistent (keep applying!)

Good luck and let us know how your holiday job search goes

A neat site for students by students
Shayla Price created Career Voices to pass on the information she learned about scholarships and school to other teens and we think its pretty neat so we wanted to pass it on to you!

From her site, "When Price was faced with the challenge of financing her dream of receiving a college degree, she took the initiative and started looking for ways to pay for her postsecondary education. After many nights of staying up late and filling out applications, Price has managed to receive more than $100,000 in scholarships."

Anybody who has applied for scholarships knows that is impressive, but what I think is even more impressive is that "She has written a book titled, The Scholarship Search: A Guide to Winning Free Money for College and More to help other students achieve success. She is dedicated to getting students out of debt and considering scholarships instead of student loans."

Keep up the good work Shayla!
